Today, the second installment of my Comanche project completed as I was able to find and drag home a 1999 Cherokee for under 300 bucks. The motor in it is shot, but the transmission, transfer case and front axle are in decent shape as well as the interior. The comanche gets inspected this week and then the big tear down and combine of both of them will really pick up in the sprin g. Only major parts left to buy is a better rear end than the Dana 35 that both the Comanche and Cherokee have.

Where do you live? I can send interesting rust buckets your way if I spot them.

(I saw a manual XJ in Cinci this weekend for $800. Needed at least $1500 in work, but anyone who can do it themselves could have done it for a lot less. I should have grabbed it, but I can’t do it myself.)

The 99 should have a 27 spline Chrysler 8.25. Flat bottom. The 35 is round bottom.

Yeah, it's a 35 :(. I have a lead on an 8.25 though so hopefully getting that soon.

Im in Pittsburgh but I’m good with what I have (I think). I’ve always wanted a comanche with the 98+ front end so that’s what I’m going to go with. Maybe in the future

From what I know, the latter XJs with 35s had the abs.

If I had to do it over agin I’d secure a explorer 8.8. I’m pretty sure you’ll have to Rearrange the spring perches for the MJ anyway. They are wider possibly.

I may be telling you stuff you already know.

Find a late 90s ford explorer rear, disk brakes, stronger than the dana 44, you will find plenty of info online

Yeah I don’t know why I said that. But I yanked my 8.25 for a 87 XJ44 years ago. After a few lockers and stuff, set up a 9” with a Currie hi9 and ARB in 2008 , haven’t driven it much since . #kids
